Morning, I know you don’t make these anymore, but I’m interested in HOW you made them… I was wondering if I could pick your brain please. Can I just use an old towel cut up for the back – is that the right kind of material? And what kind of magnet did you use and how did you fix it on? Is the magnet visible? Or is there a way of hiding it within the material? Perhaps you tried that and found that it didn’t stick as well?

Hi there – you’re right, I don’t have time to make these any more. I found myself with too many requests and, as I don’t buy bulk material, the time taken to make them for such a small benefit, wasn’t worth my while. But if you look carefully at each photo, you’ll see the exact process step by step. The towelling (so it’s fireproof) has to be 100% cotton. The wadding I use is the same sort that you would put under your ironing board cover, but I’m not sure what the equivalent is in the UK or USA (it’s different than that which you would use for example to fill soft toys or cushions with – and is fireproof). For the pattern, just put a piece of vegetable paper (grease-proof paper) or brown paper over you Aga lid and draw round it. The add the extra semicircle type bit, where the magnet will go. If you look at the photos, the magnet is slipped into the small pocket which you form on the underside and must be removed before washing. I buy the magnets over here in Spain in either handicrafts or habidashery shops. You can also buy them online. The size I use is about that of a €1,00 coin, or slightly bigger (but they’re very thin – and very strong!). Don’t try to sew the magnet permanently inside (well, I guess you could, but I did it the way I saw it done on the original Aga version, with removable magnets). Try to use an upholstery type material for the upper side (I used a finer cotton on my first attempt and it didn’t turn out well at all). Hope this is of some help. Really, just look carefully at all the photos and you’ll not really need any written instructions. But if you do have any more doubts, just let me know and I’ll try to clarify any doubts you have.
